A few days ago, I heard a simple phrase that has stayed with me:
“If you have time to scroll, you have time to call.”
Ouch.
How many minutes—or let’s be honest, hours—do we spend scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, or watching one more video that somehow turns into twenty more?
I enjoy social media. It’s part of what I do. I post regularly on my business page, stay connected on Instagram, and for a while I was on TikTok. But I finally had to step away. Not because I didn’t enjoy it—I did. In fact, I enjoyed it a little too much. I’d look at the clock and realize it was 2:00…sometimes 3:00 in the morning. That’s when I knew it wasn’t healthy anymore.
It made me stop and ask myself: What else could I be doing with that time?
The next time you pick up your phone and start scrolling, pause for just a moment.
Who haven’t you talked to in a while?
A friend from years ago. A cousin. A former coworker. A neighbor. Someone who’s been on your mind but keeps getting pushed to “someday.”
Instead of another ten minutes of scrolling, give them a call.
Not because you need anything.
Not because you want a favor.
Just because you wanted to hear their voice and ask, “How are you?”
Don’t be surprised if their first response is, “Is everything okay?” or “What do you need?” We’ve become so accustomed to calls having a purpose that a simple “I was just thinking about you” almost feels unusual.
But imagine how that call might brighten their day.
And here’s the unexpected part—it will probably brighten yours too.
Social media helps us stay informed. It helps us stay connected in many ways. But a conversation reminds us that relationships aren’t built by scrolling. They’re built by showing up, listening, laughing, and letting someone know they matter.
So here’s my challenge for you.
The next time you find yourself reaching for your phone to scroll, stop for just a second.
If you have time to scroll…
You have time to call
